The Regional President is responsible for all key performance indicators for each market within the Region and guidance of the Bank’s activities to assure short and long-term profitability.  As an Executive Team member, the Regional President assists in developing overall strategic plan objectives and goals, company policies, and business goals for the markets in the Region to position the Bank for sustained business growth and meeting of profitability targets.  The individual is expected to set a strong leadership example in representing the company’s value system and cultivate meaningful employee engagement that results in growth and development opportunities for teammates.  The person will represent Merchants’ commitment to “localness” by holding Market Presidents and teams accountable for active community engagement and leadership.

Job Summary

This is an Executive Leadership Team position with responsibility for the performance of Merchants Bank’s South Region. The Regional President is ultimately responsible for all key performance indicators for each market within the Region and guidance of the Bank’s activities to assure short- and long-term profitability.

As an Executive Team member, the Regional President assists in developing overall strategic plan objectives and goals, company policies, and business goals for the markets in the Region to position the Bank for sustained business growth and meeting of profitability targets. Is expected to set a strong leadership example in representing the Company’s value system and cultivate meaningful employee engagement that results in growth and development opportunities for teammates. Represents Merchants’ commitment to “localness” by holding Market Presidents and teams accountable for active community engagement and leadership.   

At present, this Regional President will be specifically responsible for the market performance in the communities of Rochester, Onalaska/LaCrescent (Greater LaCrosse area), Caledonia, Spring Grove, Rushford, Lanesboro, and St. Charles. As market expansion continues for Merchants, there is the possibility of modifications to the delegated market responsibilities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Represents Merchants Bank throughout the South Region in a manner aligned with our aspiration to be the financial institution of choice and recognized as a top business leader in all of our markets
  • Principal responsible for guiding sales and business development efforts in the South Region; sales management efforts should include focus on loan growth, deposit growth, non-interest income growth and cross-functional referral activity to support all business objectives of the Company
  • Principal responsible for overall profitability of all markets making up the South Region; includes accountability for pricing disciplines, net interest margin management, optimization of non-interest income, and operating efficiency within defined company targets
  • Principal responsible for overall asset quality for the Region, holding Senior Lending Officer accountable for maintaining safety & soundness within defined risk parameters and credit culture expectations for the Company as a whole
  • Principal responsible for representing the One Merchants culture of responsibility throughout the South Region with an emphasis on communication; cultivation of employee recognition, engagement & teamwork; consistent performance management; and ongoing professional growth and development of associates
  • Direct reports will include a Regional Senior Lending Officer and Market Presidents as appropriate for the variety of Markets in the Region; responsible to and for those direct reports and making sure they are held accountable for their performance; responsible for staffing throughout the Region (hiring, firing, salary administration) and ensuring all is consistent within the HR administration guidelines for the Company
  • Works with Market Presidents to make sure branch staffing models are balanced and appropriate for ensuring both customer service and efficiency standards can be achieved
  • Exemplifies the aspirational standard for exceptional customer experience, as defined in the Company’s long-range strategic plan and sets the tone of this standard throughout the Region; this includes ownership of customer experience recovery associated with service complaints within the Region
  • Has keen familiarity with the most profitable customer relationships in each of the markets defined for the South Region and supports bankers throughout the Region in business development and customer retention activities
  • Represents Merchants’ commitment to “localness” and community banking by supporting and participating in key strategic community engagement activities in each of the markets defined for the South Region and supporting his Market President direct reports in that regard
  • Principal within the Region responsible for cultivating high level of engagement of members of Local Advisory Boards of Directors as ambassadors for Merchants Bank in our communities; serves as the Designated Chair for all Local Advisory Boards within the Region; works with Market Presidents to ensure Advisory Board member performance is consistent with our expectations for Advisors to be strong source of community influence and engagement in the markets and a source of new business referrals for the Bank
  • Participates in all Strategic Planning activities for the Company and embraces ownership of appropriate strategic execution priorities as assigned
  • Responsible for working with Market Presidents to develop and execute an annual business plan for the South Region in alignment with the Company’s Strategic Plan that includes identified critical issues, objectives, strategies, and balance sheet and income expectations
  • Serves as a voting member of the Executive Leadership Team which is responsible for maintaining the Company’s values-based culture and meeting defined commitments to all identified key stakeholders: Customers, Employees, Communities and Shareholders
  • Expected to lead by example in alignment with the Company’s Servant Leadership philosophy
  • Serves as a voting member of the Company’s Enterprise Risk Management Committee
  • Serves as a voting member of the Company’s Asset-Liability Management Committee (ALCO); contributes to development of and adherence to appropriate loan pricing disciplines within construct of prudent ALCO guidelines

  • Employee may be asked to complete special assignments as directed by the President & CEO of the Company.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from the Board(s) of Directors, President & CEO of the Company, managers, employees and/or customers.

Ability to direct the business development activities for the defined market locations of the Region, drawing on personal expertise in sales.  Demonstrated ability to interact constructively and effectively with all constituencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, communicate and implement strategic initiatives within a market and ensure organizational, regional, and/or market level objectives are met.

Role Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor’s degree in business-related area or equivalent combination education and experience. MBA degree or related graduate level education desirable.  Completion of graduate level banking school.

Experience

A minimum of 10-15 years banking experience in a role with proven management and leadership skills. Banking experience must include leadership in a combination of the following areas:  commercial banking, retail banking, mortgage, wealth management, and marketing.  Previous President Role in a similar sized Bank preferred.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed largely within the Bank with limited chance for personal injury.  Prolonged and frequent mental and visual concentration required.  Periodic stressful situations in response to multiple priorities within established deadlines.  Work hours are generally during normal business hours.  Unscheduled evening and weekend work may be needed to meet the needs of customers and employees.  Occasional travel between offices and out-of-town/overnight business travel may be required.  Must be able to lift and move up to 20 pounds of office supplies and equipment.  Some bending, turning, and twisting required.  Serve as a representative of the organization at appropriate functions.

Reports to:  President & Chief Executive Officer of Merchants Bank, N.A. & Merchants Financial Group, Inc.  

Direct Reports:  Senior Lending Officer for South Region; Market Presidents (5) for Rochester, Greater LaCrosse (Onalaska/LaCrescent), Rushford/Lanesboro, Caledonia/Spring Grove, and St. Charles.
