Retiring Chief Credit Officer Mark McGrory Reflects on His Years at Merchants Bank

Mark McGrory started at Merchants Bank in 1986 as a Commercial Banker, eventually being promoted to Commercial Banking Manager and then Chief Credit Officer in 2005. Before his retirement in May 2022, Mark shared some reflections on his decades of experience as well as his guidance for the Merchants team.

Q: What is one of your fondest memories from working at Merchants?

Well, there are quite a few. I would say my fondest memories are from my time as a Commercial Banker – being able to help customers succeed and grow was incredibly fulfilling. Especially so when I was able to help facilitate the succession of a family business to the next generation.

Q: Do you have any fun stories you’d like to share?

When I turned 59, some of my coworkers put a picture frame in my office and, every week, would put a picture of a new famous person in it. They did that for a year, and then on my 60th birthday I found out they had saved all those photos, because I walked into my office and they were all posted on the walls!

Q: What makes Merchants special?

Merchants maintains phenomenal focus, attention and care for their employees. It has been there since day one – the commitment to supporting our growing team has not wavered in my 35 years. It’s clear that it’s one of Merchants’ Core Values to take care of our employees and customers because we know that happy employees help our customers succeed.

Q: Why’d you stay for as long as you did? 

You know, that’s an interesting question because when I was hired, I thought I was only going to stay for three years – get the work experience and move on. But throughout those first few years it became clear to me how dedicated Merchants was to helping their employees grow and develop in their roles. I stayed because my career goals were supported. Pair that with the focus on strategic growth for the company as a whole and it always just made sense to stay.

Q: How has the company grown in the years you’ve been there?

Naturally, the clear answer here is technology. The world is a very different place than it was 35 years ago, and while adopting new technology can be a little intimidating for a well-established bank, Merchants has done a fantastic job of keeping an open mind and evaluating which advances in technology are the most beneficial balance between security and convenience for customers. 

Q: What wisdom do you want to leave your Merchants family with?  

The number one thing I want to leave with our incredible team here at Merchants is to stay on the path. Never lose focus on our goal of serving the customer – doing what is best for them at the end of the day. This industry changes quickly, and in order to keep growing in the right direction it’s essential to hold on to our commitment to servant leadership and excellent service for the customer.

Q: What are you excited about for Merchants’ future? For yours?

What’s most exciting to me are the people we have here. The entire Merchants team is made up of incredible people with vision for the future growth of the company. I know they’re the right people to bring the company into the future while staying focused on our Community Banking philosophy – that we’re here to help our local communities succeed and thrive. 

And for me? I’m looking forward to getting better at golf (hopefully, anyway)! And of course, I’m excited to spend time with family and travel.
